Resumo: The gradual increase of violence in Brazilian society has resulted in the expansion of the prison population over the past few years. The growth of prison institutions did not pursue the accelerated growth in the number of prisoners generating inappropriate conditions and penal system, whose character is strongly punitive. These events culminate in a difficulty in practice of human rights, readjustment of citizenship, health assistance, rehabilitation and subsequent reintegration into the society. In such a situation, it can be seen in national and international searches, a high prevalence of psychiatric disorders in the prison population, especially in the female prison population. Thereby, this work aimed to investigate the prevalence of mental distress in women who are in position of deprivation of liberty. A descriptive study of quantitative approach was developed at the penitentiary with the greater concentration of female population in a prison in the State of Paraiba, called Centro de Reeduação Maria Júlia Maranhão, in the city of João Pessoa. A total of 269 women were studied at the prison. Data collection was performed through sociodemographic and legal questionnaire, the Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20) and the Inventory of Stress Symptoms for Adults Lipp (ISSL). Data were grouped into the Excel spreadsheets, and processed statistically with the SPSS software version 20.0. To obtain reliable test data were carried out: descriptive and exploratory data analysis and qui-quadrado association test. In this the study, women were predominantly native from Paraíba, aged between 18 and 30 years old (64.7%), with incomplete elementary school (54.2%), no marital relationship (63.6%) and children (82%) . Drug trafficking (46%) associations with the illegal drug trade (22%) are the main causes of imprisonment. It shows that only 17.8% are workers and 20.1% study at the prison. The prevalence of mental disorder was testified in 82.4% of women holding in custody, and the prevalence of stress was observed in 95.2% of them. The statistical association was seen between the variables, the presence of mental distress and pregnancy in prison (p = 0.01), and the presence of stress and overcrowding in the cells (p = 0.02). Through this research, it was noticed that the female prison profile are women aged in a group of young adults, single, with a history of emotional abandonment after incarceration, on average they are mothers of two children, with low education level and exercising labor activities with a low social prestige. Specifically regard to mental health, it was found that the female prison population suffer from a high rate of mental stress and suffering, and the birth of these problems is more prevalent in women who do not experience motherhood in prison and those who are found in places with large gatherings of people (which is pretty common in this environment).
