Resumo: The objective of the study was to analyze the repercussions of violence at work and on the mental health of Community Health Agents (ACS). 303 ACS from João Pessoa, Paraíba participated, who answered an instrument: sociodemographic data; professional; SRQ-20 and violence. It was observed that 77% reported that violence is present in the neighborhood where they work, 62% have already witnessed situations of violence and 53% reported having already suffered violence. The Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20) was 6.68 dp 4.98. Among the mental symptoms, stress (13.8%) and fear (10.8%) were the most cited. For 62%, violence interferes with work, especially 64% with home visits. Dialogue, bonding, mediation, support network, teamwork are strategies used by CHAs in situations of violence. The CHA suggest psychological support, public safety, justice, social assistance, as well as spaces for permanent education in health, professional development, support from health management and better working conditions. It is important to build public policy agendas with intersectoral involvement and the mobilization of various agents. It is recommended to expand public policies that prevent events of violence and assist any victim of violence in their work environment in the health area.
