Resumo: Spirituality is an important coping strategy for people who are in the cancer experience and need help to overcome the adversities caused by the disease. This work consisted of two articles: the first, theoretical, is entitled Cancer and spirituality: a bibliometric study. Objective: Map the national and international scientific literature on cancer and spirituality, from 2005 to 2014. Methodology: Study of bibliometric type, whose sample consisted of 30 articles published in the period 2005-2014, available in the databases LILACS, Portal Capes, SciELO, MEDLINE and DOAJ. Results: It was found a higher concentration of articles on the subject in 2011, in international journals focused on topics related to oncology, with origin in the United States and in English. The biggest quantity of publications was produced by researchers of the multidisciplinary area of nursing and medical practice with post-doctorates in the original article mode and with patients. Conclusion: The results show the importance of the spiritual dimension to the practice of care for patients with cancer, underscore the need for further research can be developed, with the aim of stepping up discussions on this issue, and open up possibilities to think inclusion of the dimension in the curricula of the health area courses. Introduction: The second article deals with a unique search: Search spirituality during cancer experience: experience of volunteers from a charity. This had the objective of understanding the volunteer discourse on the search for spirituality by people in the cancer experience, assisted in a philanthropic institution; and investigate whether the assistance offered to these people favors an improvement in general health and their quality of life. Methodology: This is a field study with qualitative approach, performed in the Spiritist Union Diogo de Vasconcelos Lisbon (UEDVL), spiritualist institution located in Costa e Silva neighborhood in the city of João Pessoa (PB), with thirteen volunteers. To enable the collection of data was used the semi-structured interview techniques and systematic observation. The results were analyzed by using content analysis. Results: The analysis revealed three thematic approaches: "Understanding the volunteers on the search for spirituality by people in the cancer experience"; "Assistance from volunteers to people in the cancer experience"; "Changes perceived by volunteers in the health of people in the cancer experience." Conclusion: This study showed understanding of the volunteers about the importance of spirituality as a coping strategy during the cancer experience and showed that the assistance provided is based on the activities developed by the institution and respect the individuality of beneficiaries, contributing to the improvement of well-being and quality of life of people seeking assistance in that institution during the cancer experience. Thus, the study provides a significant contribution to the practice of volunteers, including the professionals involved in health care.
