Rapid urbanization and the informal production of urban space, linked to the marginalization of dealing with socio-environmental issues in city planning, are strong marks of the structural inequalities observed in Brazil. That said, in order to contribute to overcoming the current condition, in this study it is proposed the investigation of the multidimensionality of Brazilian urban land regularization (REURB) from the perspective of managing urban-environmental challenges through the incorporation of sustainable urbanism into the urban planning and organization of cities. It is justified by the critical reflection brought about the inequality related to the informal processes of access to urban land, about the guarantee of fundamental rights to decent housing and the environment, and about the approach of the multiple dimensions of the REURB, connecting the theme, in an original way, to the reflection on possible paths aimed at overcoming structural inequalities from the perspective of sustainability. In this sense, the following question arises: to what extent does urban land regularization offer mechanisms that can contribute to the incorporation of sustainable urbanism into urban planning and organization of cities? It is assumed as a hypothesis the idea that only by considering the multiple dimensions of the REURB, there are chances that this policy can effectively contribute to managing urban-environmental challenges, through a new urban agenda focused on sustainable urbanism. The overall objective is to prospect REURB elements that enable the management of urban-environmental challenges arising from the disorderly structuring of cities and the promotion of sustainable urban development. Specifically, it seeks to: I. explore the urban issue and the challenge of making cities resilient and sustainable; II. promote contextualization about the Brazilian REURB, its multiple dimensions, legal frameworks and procedures; III. analyze sustainable urban development from the compatibility of constitutional rights to decent housing and the environment from the perspective of urban land regularization; and IV. to propose the incorporation of sustainable urbanism into urban planning and the organization of cities from the identification of possibilities of urbanism systematically suppressed in contemporary cities. The study is characterized by the qualitative approach, with a descriptive base and exploratory character, having carried out a bibliographic survey. In conclusion, it appears that is possible to prospect possibilities for sustainable urbanism in contemporary cities by implementing a new urban agenda aimed at full REURB as a public policy that encompasses legal and practical aspects, from the strengthening of municipal autonomy and federalism through cooperation.
