Resumo: | This dissertation aimed to adapt and gather evidence of validity and accuracy of three coping scales through the use of media, the Coping Scale through Book Reading, the Coping Scale through Watching Movies, and Series, and the Coping Scale Using the Internet. In addition, we sought to investigate their relationships with personality traits, and subjective well-being. For this, three empirical studies were conducted with high school, and higher education students from the state of Paraíba, Brazil. In Study 1, the Exploratory Factorial Analysis (EFA) recommended the trifactorial solution, as described in the specialized literature, presenting the latent variables emotion focused coping, problem focused coping, and avoidance coping. The percentages of variance explained ranged between 71,65%, and 76,80% (α≥0.89; λ-2≥0.89), indicating appropriate and reliable factorial structure, considering the good indexes of internal consistency in the three instruments. In Study 2, Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) ratified the validates of factorial structures with three dimensions in the proposed scales. From the testing of the alternative models, the Trifactorial models (original and reduced) exhibited better adjustment indexes, being considered equivalent. Therefore, the original trifactorial model was chosen, since it showed satisfactory adequacy to the data and, in addition to the statistical criteria, it was considered the theoretical significance pertinent to the extraction of these factors. Subsequently, the Study 3 revealed that listening to music is the most used coping behavior by the sample in question, while reading books showed a considerably inferior average, and this is the least used strategy. The factor emotion focused coping was the most used, mainly by women, presenting correlations with agreeableness, conscientiousness, satisfaction with life, and positive affections. The problem focused coping exhibited a positive relationship with the openness to experience, and positive affections, however the avoidance coping correlated with neuroticism, and negative affections, this style was less used. It was also verified the presence of significant relationships between personality traits and dimensions of subjective well-being. The observed relationship patterns determined that emotion focused coping predicts satisfaction with life, positive affections, and negative affections, while problem focused coping predicts positive, and negative affections, and avoidance coping with negative affections. It was also observed the increase of the percentage of variance with the entry of the variable agreeableness in relationships emotion focused coping, and focused problem with positive affections, and the neuroticism trait in the relationship of avoidance coping with the negative affections, suggesting that individuals with these personality traits tend to resort to these strategies, that determine their affections. The estimates of correlation, and prediction were in agreement with the theoretical, and empirical contribution, indicating that the positive characteristics of the personality, and the SWB imply in the strategies focused on emotion, and problem, while the characteristics are arroted to the avoidance style. This is expected that the validated measures, and their implications are useful for future research focused on the thematic of coping, and media. |
