Resumo: Vocal characteristics can often become barriers in the social interactions of transgender women (trans women), which can cause embarrassing situations or place them in situations of social disadvantage. The present study aimed to understand the perceptions of transgender women about the effects of voice on quality of life and socialization processes. A qualitative and exploratory study was carried out, complemented by quantitative data. Symbolic Interactionism and theories about the voice of transgender women were the theoretical lenses of this study, which was carried out in four stages. In the questionnaire application stage, 26 trans women participated, who responded to the Socioeconomic and Health Conditions Questionnaire; to the Quality of Life and Voice Questionnaire – QVV; and the Male-to-Female Transsexual Vocal Self-Assessment Questionnaire (TVQ). Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and association tests. The age of the studied group was observed to be a median (AIQ) of 32 years, 42.3% had completed high school and 57.7% worked professionally in the areas of beauty, arts and communication. Among the participants, 69.2% underwent consultations with a speech therapist and 42.2% underwent vocal reassignment surgery. The TVQ showed that 38.5% of the participants perceive their current voice as "a little feminine" and 73.1% revealed that their desire for an ideal voice was to have a "very feminine" voice, which demonstrates a distance in perception between the voice considered ideal and the current voice. In the focus group application stage, 13 transgender women participated. Content Analysis in the thematic modality was used and two themes were identified. The first deals with the "impacts of voice on the lives of transgender women" and is associated with the following core meanings: "vocal perceptions in the transsexualization process of transgender women" and "voice of transgender women and the impacts on quality of life and socialization processes". The second theme addresses the "perceptions of transgender women about actions and public policies aimed at the health of transgender people in Brazil", with the following core meanings: "public policies and actions as strategies for health protection and social inclusion" and "difficulties access to healthcare for transgender people". The vocal issue for trans women is an impact factor in socialization processes, when, often, the perception of others exposes them to situations of discrimination and prejudice in society. Thus, the present study shows the need to expand and strengthen public policies, including vocal health issues, so that they can enable universal access to health, education and work. All of this can facilitate the transsexualization process, meet the principles of comprehensive health and help combat prejudice and social invisibility, so that transgender women can have a better quality of life.
