Resumo: INTRODUCTION: In a world that is increasingly connected and dependent on the use of the internet, it is necessary to investigate the prevalence of this use among teenagers. This is due to the various associated factors and resulting consequences, which impact the mental health of this public. Research on the subject points to negative implications for the cognitive and psychosocial development of those who invest excessive time on the internet, qualifying this data as a public health problem. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the prevalence and associated factors (sociodemographic profile, lifestyle, quality of life) of excessive internet use by adolescents in public schools in Cuiabá. METHODOLOGY: This is a cross-sectional study, carried out with a sample of 799 adolescents from elementary state school, in the urban area of Cuiabá-MT, with classes from the 5th to the 9th year. For data collection, the following instruments were used: Sociodemographic Questionnaire, PedsQL Inventory, which investigates quality of life, and Internet Addiction Test, the latter being used to evaluate the dependent variable of excessive internet use. A bivariate analysis of the data was performed, using the chi-square test and prevalence ratios with 95% confidence intervals. A multiple analysis was considered, using the multiple Poisson regression model with robust variance. The variables that presented p values lower than 0.05 (p<0.05) remained in the final model. In all inferences, significance levels lower than 5% and a confidence level of 95% were considered. RESULTS: 799 adolescents were investigated, the majority of whom were female (50.81%), aged between 10 and 14 years old, mixed race/color (59.7%), children of married parents (47.81), living with father and mother (57.7%), with a good relationship with the person they live with (76.22%), not knowing how to answer the father's education (49.94%), not knowing how to answer the mother's education (39.80%), with two residents working outside the home (48.69%), with the father working (85.73%) and the mother working (71.84%). Regarding lifestyle, it was observed that the majority of adolescents do not smoke (91.49%), do not consume alcoholic beverages (82.35%), have a sports court and/or football field where they live (63.45 %), have a square where they live (61.8%), practice physical activity (70.84%), the majority, in their free time, interact with screens (51.56%). In the multiple analysis, there was a statistically significant association between adolescents who were unable to answer about their mother's education (RPa=1.44, p=0.017), those whose mother's work situation was domestic (RPa=1.33, p= 0.031), when they had a habit of drinking alcohol (RPa=1.99, p<0.001), or had already tried it (RPa=1.72, p<0.001), among those who interacted with screens in their free time (RPa =2.25, p<0.001), and when they had a low quality of life in the social (RPa=1.31, p=0.012) and school (RPa=1.44, p=0.001) domains. CONCLUSION: The results of the present study indicate a prevalence of internet addiction of 31.54% of the adolescents studied. A profile of internet addicts was observed mostly of brown race/skin color, with married parents, living with their parents, with a good relationship with those they live with, with working parents. Regarding lifestyle, it was observed that, although there is signage for a healthy lifestyle, the majority, in their free time, interact with screens. A statistically significant association was observed between internet addiction and sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle and quality of life.
