Resumo: This academic research sought to unite the history and analysis of movies with history, movies and historical education. The central source was the cartoon film, in the science fiction genre The Iron Giant, which takes place in the Cold War moment, forwarding to an analysis of the film and an empirical-study carried out in a 3rd year of a high school class at a state school in Mato Grosso. To that end, we discussed cinema as a source, and the theory and methodology behind the complex relationship between this source and the science of history. Within historical education, we reflect on culture and historical awareness, as well as methodologies for the use of movies in the classroom, never thinking of it as a teaching-aid, but rather, it should always be seen as a historical source endowed with a historical interpretation. It was also necessary to approach and reflect on the complex period of the Cold War, and its central points such as the fear, the bipolarity and the development of weapons and science, as well as analyzing how this period is put in cinema, in the fiction genre and historical genre. In the empirical study, I performed the complete exhibition of the film, and soon after a metacognitive exercise that was carried out at school, in which we seek to understand how students build sense of the problems of the movies and from other points of this acedemic research.
