Resumo: Despite M. rigida represents an important economic problem for livestock, causing "sudden death", little knowledge has about their toxic principles and how they act in animals, especially in the cardiovascular system. We evaluated clinical, laboratory and histopathological changes caused by poisoning M. rigida. Nine male adults New Zealand rabbits were divided into three groups (G) (n = 3). The animals received the equivalent of 30g/kg of dry leaves of M. rigida in two types of extracts: soluble (SG) and insoluble (IG), and the control group (CG) (ultra-pure water) for eight consecutive days. No animal had abnormal clinical, electrocardiographic (conventional and continuous) and biopsy. The hematocrit and hemoglobin decreased from the third day in the SG and the fifth day in IG. In GS, we observed increased of leukocyte from the seventh day. On the fifth day there was a decrease of calcium in the SG and magnesium in the SG and IG. In IG, phosphorus decreased from the fifth day and chlorides, on the fifth day. Changes of Doppler echocardiography suggest systolic dysfunction in the SG and IG and diastolic dysfunction in IG. It was concluded that administration of soluble and insoluble extracts of M. rigida did not cause clinically apparent intoxication in rabbits, but showed a deficit of cardiac function
