Resumo: The aim of this dissertation is to present the results of a study on the several readings of the same texts produced by children from different social strata. The relations between reader and text and between texts and other texts were dealt with. Among the several ways of broaching the question of reading, we tried to make explicit how far the knowledge of the world in general and the knowledge of other texts in particular interfere with the reading comprehension of individuals belonging to differente social groups. The reserch involved fourth graders and took place in the town of Mariana, Minas Gerais. Two groups of informats were defined on the basis of socio-economic criteria. The works chosen for investigation werw sapomorfose by Cora Rónai and Tô Pedindo Trabalho by Terezinha Alvarenga. We came to the conclusion that reading is processed differently by different social groups and that differences can be explained by the different interactional processes involved. Difeferent meanings are constructed owing to the specificity of different interactions. Starling from the results obtained,we tried to make a few suggestions for the reading work at school.
