Resumo: The Bass Trombone is a musical instrument that has reached its current design in the 1950s. Its construction innovations have set it apart, markedly, from the rest of the trombone family. A little more than a half century since its introduction in the Modern Orchestra, the Bass Trombone has stablished itself as part of the Brass Section within many instrumental groups to date. Despite that, the academic literature confirms that its second rotor is underutilized and / or misused when one takes under consideration that this device is barely used on its own despite most of the technical possibilities its introduction brought with. The present dissertation investigates the effectiveness in the quality of the production of the Legato articulation when it is performed using the Bass Trombone’s second rotor by its own. The hypothesis raised in this study is that the bass trombonist, when employing a technique of using the second rotor, will find it easier to perform leg stretches where there are large stick movements. We also analyzed, in addition to the usual low region of the instrument's range, the middle region that, due to the lack of knowledge of the technical possibilities, is not used. As a consequence, the use of this rotor, alone, can bring more efficient results in the performance of parts that have procedures with the characteristics mentioned above. To verify our hypothesis a variety of experiments were created to collect data in an empirical way, with the goal of analyzing the measured results as objectively as possible. As a conclusion, after analyzing the values of (i) Duration of Transitions; and (ii) Legato Index, it was verified a strong indication of a greater efficiency in the Legato quality effect, when the second rotor is used by its own.
