Resumo: | The understanding of heritage conservation has gradually been changing from a technical activity, based on scientific values, to a social and political activity, guided by cultural values. At the same time, as we understand conservation as a "social practice", theres a growing need to understand how the objects, collections or buildings and places are recognized as heritage. Understanding conservation as a social practice leads us ultimately to realize that its purpose is not to maintain the objects and places for themselves, but to maintain their values. In this context, this research aims to explore methods for the valuation of heritage, as well as to discuss the role of cultural values in conservation policies. It also aims to discuss a fundamental question: where do values come from? What is their relationship with the different meanings of the heritage? Thus, using different methods of assessment and a typology of values, we aim to understand, on the basis of a case study, the values attributed to the IAPI Housing Estate, in its process of nomination as heritage, in Belo Horizonte / Brazil. We would like to contribute to the construction of a descriptive theory about how the heritage is built and how diverse stakeholders attribute meaning to it, in order to illuminate how heritage is shaped by society. We believe that this approach can make explicit a variety of social processes that combine to validate heritage, understanding that a broad approach will permit us discuss the ecology of heritage conservation. This work also wants to point out that conservation must be understood as part of broader cultural sphere and as a phenomenon of public discourse. |
