Resumo: Facing last decades information and communication technology advances (ICTs) and the spread of the urban way of living, social relationships and the way people perceive, live and experience architectural space has changed. Knowing that the Architecture field deals with the human making of the environment and that design is a central element of professional and educational practices, the investigation of a distinct design practice, coherent with contemporary times, becomes urgent. In an attempt to move towards that goal, this work investigates the potentials and challenges of diagrammatic design processes within Architecture teaching, understanding space in its socio-informational dimension. As developed by Ana Fani Alessandri Carlos, Pierre Bourdieu, Denise Morado Nascimento and Regina Marteleto, this understanding of contemporary space perceives information as a dimension that shapes social action within a given time and space. Therefore, the layout of information in diagrams orients design strategy by spatializing action input and place attributes. Applying diagrams to Architecture practice expands the understanding of its use as an instrument, pointing out limitations and complementing the structuring of diagrammatic processes. The possibilities of diagrammatic design processes, discussed throughout this work, were ascertained by the monitoring of a teaching studio, the "Open House" course, taught by Professor Denise Morado Nascimento and the author, at the Architecture School of Minas Gerais Federal University. The reports and designs developed by the students during the course point out to diagrammatic processes potential to overcome design processes limitations within Architecture, mainly by articulating the place with the design; at the same time, the students' experiences inform challenges such as the separation of contemporary theory and practice in design teaching
