Resumo: The presented study is dedicated to look through the problems around the transformations of preservation’s concept through time and its reflections on the built environment. The trajectory of Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage – IPHAN) and its acting process on architectonic and urban landmarked ensembles are the guidelines of this study. Thus, the analysis is directed to the Institute’s trajectory, since its emergence, in the 1930s, to the 2000s, through investigating the preservation and public policies plans, the landmarking, the adopted criteria to interventions on real estate part of architectonic and urban landmarked ensembles and its consequences. Specifically, The acting of IPHAN on the Architectonic and Urban Ensemble of Mariana/MG was adopted as a study case. The research made possible to identify and understand the preservationist conception on a global scale within the institution and its results on the way to deal with the practical and local issues of the Architectonic and Urban Ensemble of Mariana. In addition to that, it was possible to identify the norms adopted by IPHAN through time had a reflection on the built environment of the site.
