Resumo: The present work consists in a study on the transformation of land north of the city of Nova Lima, adjacent to the southern region of Belo Horizonte, reflecting the metropolitan area. This process is associated with the urban sprawl of the metropolis, physical and environmental conditions in the city, its territorial division and the establishment of municipal government in promoting its development. It began with the history of the city, started on mineral exploration - its main economic activity, which function was essential in the structuring of urban space and lasts until the present day, when the decay of this activity gave rise to the search for new ways of economic development. The urban area has been the locus of this transformation. In this sense, the municipality of Nova Lima has attracted the implementation of regional projects, constituting a new centrality metropolitan and has experienced a demographic growth of a higher social class, which moves from the capital to the residential condominiums around the city. Are considered in addition, the limits and possibilities in the transformation of urban soil from the proposed of new developments on not-yet-split lands, showing that the mineral exploration activity in the city is giving way to urban sprawl of the metropolis. From the reports of the now defunct state agency PLAMBEL (Planning of the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte), are compared to predictions made for the city and the characteristics of its recent occupation, from changes in its urban legislation, the proposal of the city´s Master Plan, contemporary urban theories that have supported the discourse of municipal government and the very process of urban sprawl of the metropolis, in the southern, that is, toward Nova Lima, redefining its space, reaching the metropolitan scale.
