Resumo: The present work dealt with the perception of the associations between teacher education in higher education and the performance of students in the final years of elementary school in the Basic Education Assessment System. The objective was to analyze the relationship between teacher qualification and student's academic performance, first by analyzing the spatial distribution of teacher education who would possibly work in elementary school between 2001 and 2017, then analyzing the spatial distribution of graduates after graduation between 2007 and 2017, and finally investigating the student's academic performance and its relationship with the professional qualification of their teachers also between 2007 and 2017. The set of methodologies used was composed of statistical analysis, geographic analysis, ordinary least squares with robust errors and the difference-in-differences method. It was possible to conclude that teacher training was expanded and internalized, as well as the performance of these properly qualified professionals in the classroom, the latter positively influencing Portuguese language and mathematics grades in the SAEB for students in the final year of elementary school.
