Resumo: We investigated in this dissertation the relationship between the music as symbolic form and the cultural context, in the period when the composer José de Vasconcellos Monteiro lived and composed the work "Mass dedicated to São José". This symbolical form concerns a great party of the patron of the Barra Longa City, called "Party of São José, which represents that context. Therefore, we compared the current party with the musical aspects of the work in analysis (melodic and harmonic procedures), used by the composer and the relationship of his music with the society of the time, in other words, the social function in the local community. We concluded then, that the changes and the conservation of traditional aspects, noticed at the party, in the current days, establish the identity and the ethos of a people and the connection of the work with the historical context, revealing it as a mirror of that culture. Our methodology intends to explore, in integrated way, the three levels: poietic, neutral and esthesic, proposed by the Jean Molinos Tripartition Theory, developed by Jean-Jacques Nattiez and the SAAC (System of Analysis of Compared Art) from Sandra Loureiro de Freitas Reis).
