This thesis intends to discuss the meaning of Architecture and Urbanism beyond a strict and strait vision, constantly disseminated, in which form is the fundamental goal. In order to do so, we will verify in Sylvio de Vasconcellos' oeuvre - academic texts, letters, memories, joumal cronicles and projects a brazilian architect bom in 1916 and deceased in 1979, the expressing elements of a kind of thought that constructs a complete meaning for Architecture, in which substance and idea Interact. The thesis objectives to stablish a study of the interpretation of the conceptual relations that constitute the ideas proposed by Vasconcellos, and of the ways of composing a tableau in which this concepts are reflected, trying to understand the constmction of the architect's figure. We intend to analyse the dialog of ideas between Sylvio and the fortuitous participants of a knowledge web, concept the guides the methodology in which the information sources are joined and processed by the author, In order to compose a relational field among the original ideas and his own formulation. In synthesis, we intend to reveal how Sylvio has read, interpreted and constructed, sometimes redrawn, a particular understanding of modernity.
