Resumo: The psychiatric reform over the last few decades in Brazil have clearly improved mental health care in the country. However, challenges still exist due to a mismatch between significant advances in the field and the training of undergraduate and postgraduate students. To remedy this problem and meet the complex demands of this area of health, the federal Ministries of Health and Education provide funding and broad support for specializations in the form of a multi-professional residency programs. This format is considered an efficient in-service training strategy well-adapted to the integrated Brazilian health system (Sistema Único de Saúde). We examine the experiences of several participants in these programs to determine whether they accede to appropriate employment in the mental health field, and to evaluate the extent that the programs correspond to updated knowledge and policies in mental health care in Brazil. More specifically, the objective of this research is to understand how the political-pedagogical goals and strategies of the multi-professional residency programs in mental health accommodate psychosocial care perspectives in the larger metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte. Three multi-professional residency programs in mental health will be described and contextualized, accompanied by an exploratory and comparative content analysis of the implementation of their respective political-pedagogical guidelines. We hope that the research will contribute to a broader understanding of the effectiveness of this type of training process in mental health care.
