This study discusses the ways to prevent and treat juvenile crime today, recognizing the application of educational measures as the primary accountability mechanism for breaking the criminal law. We conducted a brief history of legislation and institutions for the care of adolescents in order to know the ways to treat juvenile crime before the advent of Estatuto da Criança e do Adolescente - ECA. We assume that the educational measures, in particular imprisonment, is covered by both an enforcement and education aspect, and the articulation in the practice of these two elements have been revealed as a constant challenge. Therefore, we investigated, with the team of professionals and adolescents in fulfillment of the measure, the understanding of socioeducação as well as its articulation with the theme of accountability. The survey revealed that there are three types of accountability - the legal, educational and the subjective - and that childcare work is done from this tension.
