Resumo: The main objective of this study was to investigate and assess whether or not the futsal workshop offered by a social action project in the Barreiro area, specifically in the Novo das Indústrias neighborhood (Belo Horizonte-MG) has been able to, through its pedagogical practices, organize itself as an environment conducive to the process of education and leisure for children and adolescents. This study can be conceptualized as a field study, being it both qualitative and descriptive. The tools involved in the field actions were: specific questionnaires for educators and the managers and a semi-structured interview for the educators. Three educators and two managers responded to the questionnaires, as well as 8 students whose ages were according to that set by the workshop (9 to 18 years old). The region where the social action project takes place lacks in leisure facilities already in place. Therefore, the study took this into account in order to assess whether or not the workshop meets the needs of this region. The demand for vacancies in the workshop is huge, which is no surprise. Soccer has a great value in the construction of the social identity of Brazilians, as DaMatta (1982) explores very appropriately. Soccer is still majorly played by males, which has allowed for gender-based discussions in this study, using Goellners (2000) work as theoretical background. Another approach to this work concerns the significant number of children, adolescents and young adults who are drawn to soccer-related activities, since the sport has been known to promote and rescue children and young adults, who are found to be in a race for or dreams of becoming a soccer idol, from risky, social condition. In order for the reflections and analyses to take place, the theoretical approach proposed by Damo (2007) was used. As for the approach to leisure, one of the themes of this study, the conceptualization proposed by Gomes (2008) was used. Adapted from field to court soccer, futsal or indoor soccer is a sport that has grown to be one of the main activities in school physical education classes and social action projects, not to mention that the number of schools specialized in teaching futsal has increased. In order to describe/analyze the educational approach, the theories proposed by Freire (1996) and Inconrtri (2004) were used. The social action project is promoted by a spiritualist community that has no interest in preaching its doctrines, having as its main objectives to contribute to the formation of good individuals. It was possible to conclude that the futsal workshop has a very significant value for the students, not only as a means of learning how to play a sport, but also as a social practice and as a means of socialization.
