Resumo: | Brazilian futsal captured the world's attention by winning five out of the nine World Cups in the last thirty-three years. During this time, the Brazilian Adult Male National Team was led by expert coaches who elevated the level of the most popular sport in the country. These coaches, since the learning process occurs in a non-linear fashion, achieved expert performance in their careers in differing ways. The proficiency presented by this group of coaches can be classified into various skills and areas of professional activity. The objective of this study is to investigate these coaches' careers to understand their trajectories and their conduct at the head of the Brazilian National Team over the last thirty-three years. The study contributes scientifically to helping shape other expert coaches due to its analysis of the coaches who have led the National Team for the last three decades. 86% of the National Team’s available coaches participated in the study. After transcribing the interviews, a qualitative study, examined by three experts, was performed via analyzing their content, which was separated into miniunits (Meaning Units). 252 Meaning Units were generated, classified into the following categories: training (101), competency (70), relationships (52), and orchestration (29). Family support, grassroots sports, and competitive sports were necessary factors in the development of the Brazilian National Team’s coaches. Informal learning was decisive in the acquisition of knowledge. The coaches’ competence showed special distinction regarding the criteria for choosing athletes over the three decades investigated, finding meaningful impact on the titles won by Spain in 2000 and 2004. Relationships, specifically interpersonal relationships with athletes, were understood by all coaches as facilitated by the environment of the Brazilian Team; however, relationships with other members of the coaching staff were cited by 33% of the coaches as more complex. Orchestration was assessed by all coaches as the biggest problem faced by the Brazilian Team due to the short training time available |
