Resumo: This work presents an exploratory study over the building design development process and its interface with execution of refurbishment construction, analyzing the problems and challenges faced and the compliance of technical standard ABNT NBR 16280: 2015 - Building Refurbishment - Refurbishment Management Systems – Requirements and even the concepts of project management and coordination presented in bibliographic research. The integrated multiple case method was used to elaborate the research. The result of the multiple cases analysis elucidates that the non-compliance of specific technical standard guidelines and the lack of intrinsic particularities treatment in building refurbishment projects such as the realization of an existing building consistent initial diagnosis to carry out the projects or equalization of project planning with limits and demands of the building to be renovated and possibility of unforeseen occurrence interferences during project execution or more detailed study of the construction site layout and the services execution impact in case of occupied building can contribute to lengthy design processes and scope, cost and time problems. The research presented design management guidelines based on theoretical framework and cases analyzed and were defined in order to characterize and conduct the design process and project-construction interface also discussing the role of coordination in the management of building refurbishment projects.
