Resumo: | This thesis analyzes the centrality of self-translation in the work of the Irish writer Samuel Beckett and of the Canadian writer Nancy Huston, who both wrote extensively in French, a foreign language. More than a comparative study, in a traditional sense, the choice of putting these two authors side by side serves to justify a poetical principle that I identify in Beckett and which is defined as a literary project also carried out by Huston. I first, consider a review of the traditional limits that separateliterature and criticism, considering that a literary text also speaks for itself and can be used to interpret others. Thus, rather than a comparison, the ideia is that Huston helps us to read Beckett and vice versa. I did not choose only one specific work by the authors as this study favors a theoretical aspect, focusing on self-translation, a theme that runs through the entire work. I chose a panoramic analysis of both, that would allow us to approach this poetic principle. Still, I chose some works for a more detailed analysis. This work follows the paths of the theories that allow us to think about translation and its possible effects as a poetic, mainly from Antoine Berman, Henri Meschonnic and Walter Benjamin. Finally, this limbo of self-translation, the no-place between writing and translation, and of the writer, situated in-between literatures, provides a space ofcreation in addition to becoming a privileged place to put on perspective the main questions concerning literary translation. |
