Composer born in Minas Gerais, Brazil, Hostílio Soares (1898-1988) produced about 40 songs throughout his life, divided into sacred songs, patriotic songs, hymns and chamber songs. We should put in relief, among the chamber songs, the Álbum para canto e piano cinco peças em vernáculo, an awarded piece, which is the object of study of the present work. In order to study this particular piece, I used the methodology developed by the research group Resgate da Canção Brasileira of the Escola de Música, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, which consists in analyzing the poem, the musical part of the song, the relationship between text and music and, finally, suggesting a interpretation to the piece from the results of these procedures. Besides this specific study, I present different versions of this work, the classification of all songs written by Hostílio Soares and a brief summary of each of these pieces.
