This thesis discusses the relationship of the carioca writer Afonso Henriques de Lima Barreto (1881-1922) with the Brazilian historical culture of the beginning of the 20th century. His published texts (novels, chronicles, short stories and articles) as well as personal annotations (sketches of works and study projects) and correspondences that indicate representations of the past and reflections on how to investigate and narrate the history of Brazil were compared with the narratives and thoughts of other intellectuals of his time, who were also engaged in publicizing a national memory Thus, we highlight the vision of Lima Barreto on the construction of literary and historical narratives that sought to build an image of national identity and pointed out the resources that used to compose his works in order to socialize the memory of socially marginalized groups.
