This dissertation aims at finding answers to the question of how design can contribute to the sustainable development of craft production. The solutions adopted by researchers working on extension projects and design research as well as actions taken by managers and consultants who work in institutions that support this sector to equip guidelines supporting sustainable production were analyzed in order to reach the answers, proposing to articulate a reflection on the relationships between recent theories of development and the role of designer as agent provocateur behavior change and sustainable practices in artisanal production in Maranhão context. In order to equip guidelines aimed at sustainable production, the survey conducted by analyzing data collected along with a group of craftworkers Mulheres de Fibra in São Luís, State of Maranhão, enabling a categorization of procedures that contributed to the sustainable development of handicraft production and that can be replicated in other groups and communities.
