The purpose of this research is to investigate if the prohibition of incest could have, in the context of Freudian theory, a psychic construction itself. In his texts, Freud makes it clear that this prohibition is one of the bases for the very existence of culture. However, from the cultural point of view, it seems to be linked to religious belief, so that culture would be rooted in something that favours religion. As in the essay “The future of an illusion” (1927) Freud sustains that humanity could put away religion preserving culture, we reach the following problem:could the incest prohibition, in Freudian terms, be psychically articulated without implying religious belief? Would it be possible to endorse, from within Freudian thought, the possibility of constitution of culture without the consequence of religious belief?
