Resumo: The objective of this study was to analyze the assignment of technicaladministrative staff in the 63 federal public universities and their many configurations, as well as to present the profile of these staff members at the Universidade Federal de Lavras. By means of this analysis, we propose two indicators: one indicator for the Academic Dimension, which encompasses comparative indexes of technical-administrative staff regarding the amount of professors, students and undergraduate and graduate courses; and an indicator for the Managerial Dimension, which encompasses the qualification levels and classification of the technical-administrative staff. In the study’s concept foundations, we present the trajectory of public administration, from patrimonialism to the New Public Service and the role of the federal public university confronting the challenges of administration. We also approach the themes on planning and dimensioning of personnel in Brazilian public administration, in which we relate the first proposals for planning and professionalization of public administration in Brazil, in addition to a brief study on the importance of using indicators in administration. Subsequently, we present the evolution of the personnel area, the carrier and position structure and the personnel development policy in the federal public service. The research methodology adopted for the analyses was descriptive statistics, by which we constructed tables and graphs, as well as comparative indexes of staff assignment. The data collection was conducted by means of bibliographical and documental research. With the study developed, we can conclude that there are large variations on the assignments of technical-administrative staff on the 63 federal universities. Given that the proposal of this study was to analyze the assignments under the administrative point-of-view, future studies can analyze which variables present greater interference over assignments, if technical or politic, and evaluate causes universities so well classified in the IGC/INEP, be located in the lower levels of technical-administrative staff assignment.
