Resumo: This work deals with the struggle of the babassu coconut breakers of the village of Petrolina located inthe rural area of Imperatriz, Maranhão. In 1998 they founded an association of breakers to combat the burning of the, whole coconut fighting in defense of the traditional culture of poconut oil, the environment, and seek to offer income alternatives to extractive workers in the village. By fighting this new practice, which according to them does more harm than good, they're looking for a process that is not new in this community, but conestron previous decades, when the Great Carajas Project was accomplished in the Amazon.
