Resumo: The use of chemicals as a form of prevention, protection and control to combat diseases that affect plants, is a feasible solution involving control measures, that over the years, with the improvement of these products, raise the effectiveness of such chemicals. However, due to the emergence of microorganisms resistant to these products, new tests need to be performed in the laboratory, requiring the effort of the specialist in phytopathology and to investigate these microorganisms, with research of genetic analysis, resistance to chemical products, among others. One of the methods used includes laboratory tests, periodically verifying the growth of the fungal colony with measurements using a ruler or caliper. However, this method, although it is most commonly used, is also imprecise, since measurements of the same plaque by different professionals may result in different measurements. Due to this, the development of a method that assists professionals in phytopathology, for measurement of fungal colony growth in Petri dishes, provides other means of measurement besides the traditional use of visual analysis by ruler or pachymeter. For this, processes were developed involving region segmentation, unnecessary information removal and colony size calculation by color analysis. The study was developed using images containing Petri dishes with growing fungus colonies, comparing the manual method performed by the specialist in Phytopathology and the performed by digital image processing. It was possible to verify the application and potential of the method developed for creating mobile applications. Therefore, this work presents a method for measuring fungal colony on Petri dishes from isolates of the fungus Corynespora cassiicola, using techniques involving processing from images captured by mobile device, with the purpose of assisting the professional, providing other means besides a manual process.
