Resumo: | This study aims at researching the mechanisms responsible for creating literature in the Brazilian State of Tocantins. From the analysis of this context, we conclude that literature in this State is characterized by a process of construction, in which Academies of Literature have a pivotal role. These institutions are responsible for creating mechanisms to organize and publish literature through their commitment in discovering and motivating new writes, making them known to public by supporting publications and, hence, contributing to a considerable increase in the number of writers and their literature produced. We also found that this interest in literature organization and publication is related to political issues, noticeable in the Academies efforts toward establishing Tocantins culture and creating an identify to this State, as it is stated in these institutions constitution. However, domination of political issues over literary ones is present not only in these documents, but also in the literature produced by the Academies members. Accordingly, similarities between this literature and the one produced in the XIX century, concerning their connection to a political panorama, are conspicuous. In the case of Tocantins, its history might be seen as an element that triggered a type of literature concerned about creating an identify and a particular history that forge culture and literature peculiarities, differentiating this State from the other Brazilian location. We, therefore, suggest that Tocantins Academies of Literature and their members publications are cleverly used as instruments to create a cultural and political identify to the State, which is beyond literature s essentially esthetical issues. |
