De mares e travessias: three novels, three journeys proposing a comparative reading of three contemporary novels of the Portuguese language recapturing the travel literature written in the period of the Great Voyages of Discovery. Throughout this study we have sought to analyze how, in a present time perspective, the past is revisited and rewritten through procedures which characterize the so-called historiographic metafiction. The following works were chosen as the corpus of the analysis: Peregrinação de Barnabé das Índias, by Portuguese author Mário Cláudio, introducing a man of the people as the main character of the journey to Índia; Desmundo, by Brazilian author Ana Miranda, telling the misfortunes of a young woman who arrives in Brazil at the beginning of the colonial period, and Nação crioula. by Angolan author José Eduardo Agualusa, whose character excerpted from A correspondência secreta de Fradique Mendes, by Eça de Queirós moves to and from Portugal, Angola and Brazil. Besides the discussion on the critical bias of these texts, other points were also raised allowing us to analyze them under concepts such as intertextuality, polyphony and dialogism.
