Resumo: This work explores the performance of Afro-brazilian dance, especially of Orixá dance within this profane context, underlining at the same time the sacred trait of the performance as well as its origins in the sacred world of the Afro-brazilian religion of Candomblé. Within the performance, I analyze the body as producer of meaning, communication tool, and memory and identity guardian. This thesis presents how the interactional games, gestures, movements and other dance body symbols within a performance, thanks to a sensorial intelligence and to a body knowledge, produce and transmit histories and meaning that are part of a rich afro-brazilian cultural patrimony. Methodologically speaking, the research was based on an auto-ethnography as a dancer of Afro-brazilian dance, supported by sociological, anthropological communication and performance theories, and I especially focused on interactionist and phenomenological views to analyze the research object. The goal of this work is to show the importance of the body and of the sensorial intelligence in the meaning production and communication within the Afro-brazilian dance performance, valorizing this as a complex art, rich in history and beauty, capable of teaching, remembering and transmitting a special knowledge which is part of the Afro-brazilian culture, and which needs to be recognized and appreciated
