This research is based on a primary data of the vestibular contest of the Fluminense Federal University of 2004 and on the Ethnic-racial Census carried through in the same university in 2003 to search and to understand the determining factors of social mobility in the access and permanence of students taken for their racial origins. Although recent, the research on the reality of black students in higher education has excited many controversies, especially involving the debate on the adoption of affirmative politics on the part of Brazilian public universities. Thus, this research, which assumes the diversity as a positive value for society, tends to confirm the adoption of guided affirmative actions for race, not leaving out the specifics of the socioeconomic reality and the contours of politics face the continuum of colors which characterizes Brazilian society.
