Resumo: In this globalized contemporary society where travel and communication technologies decrease physical distances between diverse people across the world, thus intercultural contacts and intercultural relationships has been facilitated. Regarding the incipient phase of scientific studies on romantic relationship it was decided to present the current doctoral thesis focused on Robert Hinde’s framework about Interpersonal Relationship. Thus, the current thesis focused on the case of Brazilian women in romantic relationships with men from other nationality, attending to cases of men who do not speak the Portuguese language. Three interdependent studies were conducted. Study 1 focused in the initial phase of the relationship in order to describe cultural differences perceived as relating to foreign man. Study 2 investigated how Brazilian spouse accommodates herself during the stage of adaptation on marital life in an intercultural relationship. Study 3 examined Brazilian women’s profiles registered in an international dating site in order to date a foreign partner. Each study was based in a specific methodology. The results indicate that cultural differences are perceived as positively diversity and complementarity in the initial phase of the relationship but along the marital life can be perceived negatively facing certain challenges. The spousal support to partner in adapting to the place of residence become crucial for marital adjustment and quality of relationship. In the Study 3 it was observed that women registered on the website purposely presented attributes on the profile they believe to be valued by a potential partner, disregarding possible cultural differences between them. The findings suggest that not only cultural differences matter on the relationship but also the situation where the couple meets each other present several implications for the relationship.
