Resumo: The master's research aims to understand how Barra do Ceará, a suburb of Fortaleza, is presented through Valber Firmino's Instagram, a resident of that neighborhood and a member of the Aloha Surf Project. The choice for Barra do Ceará was because it is a historic neighborhood and has sociocultural activities linked to the peripheral youths of the neighborhood. The research reflects that this cut is related to popular communicative practices as presented in Peruzzo (2009), Cogo (1998), Ferreira (2012) and Oliveira (2002: 2020). It is also argued that the research theme is centered on a society mediated by the Internet as proposed in Castells (1999: 2003), whose individual subjects, on the network, form virtual communities based on their interests and demands, in addition to the construction of collective knowledge (JENKINS, 2009; SHIRKY, 2011; RECUERO, 2011). As methodological procedures, the work uses Bonin (2012) exploratory research, fundamental for the reformulation of the “object” and the research questions, the ethnography for the internet Hine (2004:2015) and semi-structured interviews in loco and via Instagram direct. The investigation concluded that Valber Firmino uses Instagram as a channel of expression as a way to articulate and mobilize a collective that is part of his Instagram connections.
