A criação poética na tradução: a proposta tradutória de José Lira para a tradução de poemas de Emily Dickinson

Resumo: This work aims to analyze the translation proposal of José Lira, used in the works Alguns poemas (2006) and A branca voz da solidão (2011) for the translation of poems by the American poet Emily Dickinson (1830-1886), from English to Brazilian Portuguese. In the mentioned works, the translator published around 510 translations of Emily Dickinson's poems into Brazilian Portuguese, dividing his method of work into three personal concepts of translation, named: recreation, imitation and invention. The translations made in the conception of recreation, prioritize the greatest possible identity with the form of the source poem, the translator seeks to preserve the metric and the phonic aspects of the poem in English in the translated version. In the imitation conception, translation is more focused on the context of the poem, which is translated in order to facilitate the reader's understanding. The concept of invention, is a more innovative type of translation, as it distances itself from the poetic structure, creating a new poem inspired by the “reading impression”, of the poem in the source language. In this research, we consider that the translator presents an innovative methodology for the translation of poetry, as it exposes a plurality of methods to translate Dickinson's poems; therefore, we will investigate José Lira's translation proposal and its relationship with creative translation and co-authorship in translation. To carry out the analyzes, we focused on twelve translations of poems made by José Lira, dividing them according to the concepts proposed by the translator. In the conception of recreation we will analyze the poems: “Some such butterfly be seen” (J541) and “I never saw a moor–” (J1052) translated in the book Alguns poemas (2006) and “There's a certain Slant of light” (J258) and “Hope” is the thing with feathers ”(J254) published in the book A branca voz da solidão (2011). In the imitation conception we will analyze the poems: “I taste a liquor never brewed” (J214) and “I died for beauty but was scarce” (J449) published in Alguns poemas (2006) and “Safe in the alabaster chambers” (J216) and “Love thou art high” (J453), published in A branca voz da solidão (2011). In the conception of invention we will analyze the poems “A sepal, a petal and a thorn” (J19) and “We - lose because we win–” (J21) published in Alguns poemas (2006) and the poems “Finding is the first act” (J870) and “Sic transit Gloria Mundi” (J3) published in A branca voz da solidão (2011). As a theoretical foundation, we use Pignatari (2007), which addresses important aspects of poetic language; Venuti (1995) and Faleiros (2011), who present and discuss the role of the translator in the literature; as well as Britto (2012), Ronái (2012) and Campos (2015), who discuss the characteristics of poetry translation.
