Resumo: Work of descriptive qualitative boarding, had as objective to watch the meaning of the son’s donation for lhe mother, understanding its definition of situation face the decision of donating it. The data were obtaíned by means of free observatíons, field newspaper and a semi- structured ínterview based in three basic items - Identification, pregnancy and donation. The data were collected in the period of March to June of 1995, having the study been accomplished with 19 mothers. The interpretative analysis of the speeches was proceeded to the light of the symbolic interactionism in Herbert Blumer's perspective, In those it was evidenced that, to the symbolic gesture of the son’s donation, the mothers attribute the meaníngs of financial, educational and affective help; social freedom and of the companion; and attenuation of the blame for the pregnancy undesirable and abortion attempt. This attempt of discovery of the meaning also revealed that the mother, when donating the son, addresses its action under three perspectives; hers, her son and both's, being evidenced, also, to be this gesture a decision difficult of being taken by the mother, once he contains uncertainty elements, hopes and weaknesses.
