Resumo: The present work has the purpose of evaluating the structure of a population of Morada Nova sheep breed from State of Ceará. Data were collected from the file to control the breeding of Sheep Improvement Project for the Morada Nova Breed white variety, of the Department of Animal Science in the period from 1970 to 1987 for records of 2,403 animals, (922 males and 1,481 females). The effective size (Ne), coefficient of consanguinity (F) and average relatedness coefficient (AR) individuals, effective size of founders and ancestors (fa and fe), generation interval (IEG), integrity of pedigrees and Wright’s F statistics have been estimated. We could observe the occurrence of loss of original genetic material and the intensive use of related animals among the sheep. The obtained generation interval average for males was satisfactory, although for females the averages had lower magnitudes. The estimated AR medium rates had few variations in population, except for the first five years of record. We could observe subdivision in population due to the more intense use of some breeding animals causing genetic isolation among flock. Therefore, we came to the conclusion that this flock was in a critical situation during the period of this study, and it needs a focused administration in preservation and conservation
