Resumo: This paper has a propose to present a model-testing to assess the degree of adoption of corporate governance practices for family businesses, small and medium sizes. The basic assumption of the study is that it is relevant and feasible to design a diagnostic tool, to assess the adoption of corporate governance practices for family businesses in order to assist them in improving their management. This assumption, in turn, rests on the idea that the degree of coverage of the principles and concepts of governance and management include in its theoretical framework, the family businesses, small and medium sizes, have already adopted, but not Intentionally or not systematically, management practices aligned with these principles and concepts. Therefore, a greater alignment with the corporate governance practices can help improve organizational management of family business. Initially, we conducted a survey of the literature on corporate governance and family businesses to subsidize the development of model-testing proposed, which was implemented in 03 organizations in the city of Fortaleza. The model consists of five dimensions (strategy, structures, processes and management, sustainability and durability), which in turn are subdivided into categories and statements. When implemented, it was realized the relevance of the proposed model as an instrument to provide information for decision making by business leaders and thus contribute to improving the management of the companies surveyed. It was felt that the changes proposed by the leaders in the weights of the dimensions, may be the subject of discussion for each diagnosis made, but that in the particular project, not reflected in significant changes in levels of membership of the organizations surveyed the practices of corporate governance.
