Resumo: The term "heavy metal" has been used to refer to a group of chemicals that have historically been associated with environmental contamination and toxicity processes. The origins of these elements in the soil may be by natural or human action. It is important to the determination and quantification of heavy metals, as although some have essentiality for plants and animals, its excess can cause problems and others that have not proven biological function may cause problems even in minimal amounts. The aim of this study was to determine the natural levels of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), mercury (Hg), manganese (Mn) , molybdenum (Mo), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), selenium (Se) and zinc (Zn) in four areas of the state of Ceara soil. The aim of this study was to determine the natural levels of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), mercury (Hg), manganese (Mn) , molybdenum (Mo), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), selenium (Se) and zinc (Zn) in soils of four areas of the State of Ceará and correlate the results of this study with reference values already established for other states. the 3050B methodology was used for extraction of metals from soils and quantification was carried out by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The amounts of heavy metals found in soils followed the decreasing order: Fe >> Mn> Zn> Cr> Pb> Co> If> Mo> Cd> As> Hg. The amounts of heavy metals in the surface layer 0-20 cm of soils are below the quality reference values stipulated by CONAMA, CETESB and FEPAM. The soils of 0-20 cm layer have heavy metal content below the reference values of the States of Minas Gerais, São Paulo and Santa Catarina. Heavy metals studied showed average levels in the lower subsurface layer the Prevention values (PV) established by CONAMA. The excess of the levels Prevention values (VP) of Cu in point 13 of the Ni in points 6, 12 and 13 and Se in point 3 are assigned to the source material.
