The patients studied had been hospitalized more than 6 days in the surgical unit of a teachmg Hospital xn Ribeirão Freto, SF, Brasil. They included patients who had been operated and others who had not yet been operated. These patients value and expect a professicnal who assumes leadership in the interaction, but who sees the necessities of the patient. An ill individual hospitalized in a surgical clinic feels dissatisfied with the techmcal performance of nursing care, relating that the consequences of this behavior are generally negative, causing a Iack of confidence in care and in the staff, irritatian, feelings of rejection, reinforcsment of negative self-image and tension.
