Resumo: The onset of antimicrobial use from the 1930s was a major factor in reducing mortality rates in the developed world. Besides use in human health, antimicrobials, too, are used in animal health and other commercial activities. It occurs that the indiscriminate use of antimicrobials can generate one of the main problems of public health, microbial resistance. In an attempt to contribute to the reduction of antimicrobial resistance, the Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency (ANVISA), on October 26, 2010, determined the retention of the antimicrobial prescription dispensed in pharmacies in the country. In this work, Brazilian access and consumption of antimicrobial drugs are analyzed through a descriptive pharmacoepidemiological study based on prescription and consumption data carried out by pharmaceutical establishments in the National System of Controlled Products Management (SNGPC). In this study, a trend of seasonal consumption was probably related to winter. As well as, a percentage of dentists' prescription much higher than that described in other articles. The states that present the highest per capita consumption of industrialized antimicrobials are Rio Grande do Sul, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Paraná. The state, through ANVISA, should revisit this control measure, in order to make adjustments and increase awareness of the rational use of these medicines, in order to obtain good results as in the case in Chile.
