This habit might perform death as a moment of sadness or joy, but regardless of the feelings that take over the relatives and friends, the attempt to perpetuate the memories of the loved beings is always a priority. Despite the taboo that still exists when approaching the theme, it is of extreme importance for the study of society and urban evolution, once it is concerning the city of dead: the necropolis. In this funeral spaces, which is similar to the metropolis, the man feels the need to expose his likes and needs through architecture, and in some cases, he tries to exceed himself among the others, using the profusion of the funerary art, always present in the graves, particularly within the richest families. This thesis introduces a study about cemeteries in Maceió, until it gets to a more precise analysis of what it is known and seen currently, from the visitation of cemeteries and churches in Maceió; photographic records and the study of several books, articles and papers about this subject, with the purpose of studying the funerary art existing in the graves of Nossa Senhora da Piedade Cemetery, located in Prado neighborhood, and its hierarchy.
