Resumo: This is a qualitative and descriptive study of social representations about school violence made by students / those of a rural school community. Data collection took place through four techniques: technique of free association of words (TALP); cartoon-themed story; semi-structured interviews and systematic observation. Content analysis Cartoon-themed story was given according to the proposed by Coutinho (2001) model and the analysis of data extracted from TFAW and interviews through thematic content analysis of Bardin. Data analysis revealed three categories: Category 1 - violence is death and / or attempted murder; Category 2 - violence is a way of resolving conflicts; Category 3 The causes of violence are family breakdown, drug use and lack of information about violence. The representations elaborated by the students emphasized the physical aspects of violence and made the issue as a reflection of the problems experienced outside the school walls. The group referred to the need for the school to be a more attractive environment for young people, with dissemination of strategies for coping with violence and actions that result in new arrangements in social relationships and in everyday school life.
