José Bento Monteiro Lobato (1882-1948) was known, in Brazil, as a children books writer, but he wrote for adults too. He had several occupations: farmer, businessman, lawyer, journalist, editor, translator and writer. He wrote several literary genders: essays, articles, novels, literary letters and short-stories. The purpose of this work is, first of all, to introduce the familiar, political and literary life of Monteiro Lobato, using his literary letters in the book A Barca de Gleyre and, based on letters, to discuss literature, style, critical thoughts and literary theory in order to understand the structure of his short-stories in the books Urupês (1918), Cidades Mortas (1919) e Negrinha (1920). Some short-stories will be analysed individually, other in theme groups. Other types of texts by Lobato will be used in the work, but the main texts will be literary letters and short-stories.
