Resumo: This research intends to investigate the theatrical production in the Amazonas, a state located in the north of Brazil, during the second half of the 19th century. This study will focus on the path traveled traversed by the artist José de Lima Penante and his intense activity dedicated to the arts of the scene, not only in Amazonas but also in some capital cities of the northeastern region. The history of the first theaters raised in Manaus is also the object of study of this research. This fills a gap in the theater historiographical production in the north of Brazil. This work intends to draw a parallel between the styles of the theatrical production developed and presented in Manaus and the ones that circulated in other capitals of Brazil, in a selected period of time in the years of 1868 and 1887. Finally, the dramaturgy of one of the works left by Penante was also analized in order to continue the studies initiated by Vicente Salles and Márcio Páscoa about the work developed by the artist. The methodology of the study follows a historiographic proposal to delve into the writings, the periodicals, the chronicles and the criticisms of the aforementioned artistic production, as a way of dialoguing with its past.
