This is a study about the elaboration and monitoring process of the Municipal Master Plan (PDM) of Irati (PR). The theme addressed has relevance due to the socio-environmental and economic consequences for the future of the various local and regional communities. The deepening of market globalization and the aggravation of climate change on a planetary level justify the need for a sustainable land use planning, thus, the regulations on the use and changes of land use need to consider their impacts for the present and future generations. The applied methodology is based on qualitative research, documentary analysis of the changes in the Municipal Master Plan (2004 and 2016), supported by a review of the literature on land use planning published in the period 1985 to 2021. Secondary data were complemented with primary data obtained through interviews with councilors and former councilors, in a non-probabilistic sample. The results show the importance of the PDM and its execution for spatial planning.
