Resumo: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is considered one of the main viral agents causing serious respiratory tract infections in infants and children worldwide, responsible for annual outbreaks. RSV infection results in various symptoms, since common influenza and even more severe as bronchiolitis and pneumonia. The global annual incidence of RSV infection in children under 5 years was estimated at 34 million cases per year, with at least 10% of events that represent serious infections requiring hospitalization. The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence of acute respiratory infection caused by RSV in symptomatic patients in primary care service calls to public health in the city of Guarapuava- Paraná. Thus, 144 were collected samples of nasal secretion, being included in the study patients of all age groups, met in the public health services in the city of Guarapuava- Parana, between the year of 2013 and 2014. The results obtained the average age of patients included in the study was of 35,17 years and the median of 31 years, varying with the minimum of 1 year and a maximum of 82 years of age. The analysis of patient data and standardization of RT-PCR methodology through RSV controls strains in the laboratory of Virology and Molecular Biology UNICENTRO were completed successfully, for subsequent application of the technique in nasal secretion samples collected. The methodology RT-PCR standard was applied in the samples, however there aren't cases of respiratory infection by RSV in patients with respiratory symptoms in the city of Guarapuava-PR, which has damaged the description of clinical frame, association of risk factors and use of medicines on infected cases.
